The Slought Foundation exhibition "Show for the City: Art by the Youth of West Philadelphia" features work by participating art students from West Philadelphia schools. "Show for the city" showcases area arts and culture by the youth of our neighborhood. The exhibition also indexes the problematic status of arts education in Philadelphia, and highlights the inapplicability of current teaching methodologies for those exploring or pursuing a career in the arts. This exhibition has been organized around the 2003 budget hearings, amidst widespread institutional critique about the quality of public education and socioeconomic disparities. At the time of opening, the arts programs at many of the participating schools in this exhibition are slated for reductions or elimination. This exhibition is curated by Art Instructors from West Philadelphia Schools, including: Ronald DeCecco, Amanda Johnson, Glenn Miller, Mtukutu Mtumaini-El, Robin Townsend, and Diane Vaughn.
Please note: A live performance by the West Philadelphia High Jazz Ensemble will accompany the exhibition opening!
Organized in conjunction with the Center for Community Partnerships, with assistance by Cory Bowman, Deirdra Stockmann, Maria Cipollone, Alyssa Lord, and Joy Anderson. Supported by the West Philadelphia Cultural Alliance
